WHO WE ARE

We are a growing coalition of residents, businesses, community organizations and stakeholders from the Times Square community who are committed to its long-term future and concerned about the significant negative impacts a casino would bring. Coalition members include:

ABOUT THE CURRENT COALITION MEMBERS

  • The Broadway League, the trade association representing Broadway’s theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers. 
  • The Shubert Organization is America’s oldest professional theatre company and the largest theatre owner on Broadway.
  • Audience Rewards is the Official Rewards Program of Broadway and provides benefits and rewards for fans of the performing arts.
  • Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations, helps people across the country and across the street receive lifesaving medications, health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance.
  • The Entertainment Community Fund is a national nonprofit organization that fosters stability and resiliency, and provides a safety net for performing arts and entertainment professionals over their lifespan.
  • The American Bus Association, the most trusted motorcoach, group tour and travel association in the industry, provides nearly 600 million passenger trips annually. 
  • Theatre Development Fund (TDF) sustains live theatre and dance by engaging and cultivating a broad and diverse audience and eliminating barriers to attendance. TDF provides support to more than 900 plays and musicals, returning upwards of $2 billion in revenue to thousands of Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway music and dance productions.
  • 54 Below preserves and expands the art of the cabaret while providing an unparalleled audience experience, honoring the cabaret tradition and the music and community of Broadway by pursuing excellence in content, performance, hospitality and cuisine. 
  • The Student & Youth Travel Association, a non-profit, professional trade association that promotes the social and economic value of student and youth travel worldwide. SYTA is the “Voice of Student and Youth Travel.” 
  • The UFT, which represents nearly 200,000 members, is the sole bargaining agent for most of the nonsupervisory educators who work in the New York City public schools. It represents approximately 75,000 teachers, nearly 25,000 classroom paraprofessionals, and many other school-based titles including school secretaries, school counselors and occupational and physical therapists. It also represents family child care providers, nurses, and teachers and other employees at a number of private educational institutions and charter schools. ​
  • The Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association, a volunteer membership and advocacy organization representing residents and community members in Hell’s Kitchen South focused on enriching the area’s unique urban character.  
  • The West 43rd Street Block Association aims to give individual New Yorkers living on West 43rd Street a voice in furtherance of improving safety, cleanliness, peacefulness, and community.
  • The Manhattan Plaza Tenants Association, which advocates for positive changes in the Manhattan Plaza residential complex, home to nearly 3,500 people, and the surrounding neighborhood.
  • The Hell’s Kitchen Block Association, which was formed in response to the over-development of the Hudson Yards area.
  • The West 47th – 48th Streets Block Association, which was formed more than 50 years ago to advocate for residents living on West 47th and 48th Streets, from 8th Avenue to 11th Avenue.
  • The HK49-54 Block Alliance serves the residents of West 49th thru West 54th Streets from 8th Ave to 12th Ave.
  • The West 55th Street Block Association was formally organized in 1978. Its purpose is to promote a better block and community through group action.
  • The West Side Neighborhood Alliance, which is an independent, member-run organization that mobilizes West Side residents, advocates for a diverse, affordable, livable neighborhood, and works to guarantee that the ongoing development of the neighborhood serves community members of all races, incomes and backgrounds.
  • Council of Chelsea Block Associations is comprised of fifteen Block Associations, four Tenant Associations, and one Public Member block covering seventy-nine blocks in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. The Block Associations work every day to improve the quality of life for those who live, work in and visit Chelsea.
    ​The Clinton Hell’s Kitchen Chelsea Coalition for Pedestrian Safety (CHEKPEDS), founded in 2005 by residents and community leaders to reclaim 9th Avenue from hellish Lincoln Tunnel traffic, works directly with elected officials and other community stakeholders to obtain crucial traffic relief and pedestrian safety measures locally and citywide.
  • Times Square Church, one of the largest interdenominational churches in New York City, with a congregation representing more than 100 different nationalities, is located at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in the Theater District.
  • Encore Community Services, which since 1977 has provided seniors in Times Square/Clinton communities with a range of caring and quality services to help them live independent and dignified lives. 
  • Sardi's, one of New York City’s most storied restaurants for over 100 years, is part of the magic of Broadway, providing as many as 600 pre-show meals to theatregoers each night.  
  • Joe Allen, the quintessential New York restaurant in the heart of the Theater District that’s welcomed performers, locals and tourists for more than 50 years. 
  • Orso, the elegant but informal Italian restaurant and one of the premier dining destinations on “Restaurant Row.” 
  • Bar Centrale, one of the Theater District’s hidden gems. 
  • The National Organization for Women in New York City is the largest women's rights membership organization in the city. NOW-NYC engages elected leaders, business and New Yorkers to advance equality and opportunity for women and girls. 
  • Project FIND’s mission is to provide homeless, low-income older adults with the services and supports they need to enrich their lives and live independently. Today, Project FIND houses 600 older adults across its three residential buildings in the Times Square, Upper West Side and Hell’s Kitchen’s communities as well as four older adult centers assisting more than 2,500 older adults each year.
  • The Ali Forney Center is the largest and most comprehensive service agency for LGBTQ+ Youth experiencing homelessness, providing full wrap-around support services in a 24/7 365 Drop In Center near Times Square and operating 13 different housing sites for 2200 youth per year. 
  • ATPAM members are Press agents, Publicity and Marketing specialists, Company managers and Theater Managers who work in live theatre on Broadway, Off Broadway and across North America. ATPAM provides, training, education, and mentorship, making sure that each member feels supported from the moment they land their first job.
  • Local 764 currently has over 1,800 members working in all aspects of costume and wardrobe work in the New York City area in virtually every major live entertainment venue in the city, as well as on television shows and motion pictures shooting within a 50-mile radius of Columbus Circle, plus child actor guardians for live performance.
  • Local One is the premier stagehand union of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E). We are the Brothers and Sisters who construct, install, maintain, and operate the lighting and sound equipment, the scenery and special effects which thrill and delight audiences who attend Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Arena concerts and Broadcast Television in New York City, Westchester & Putnam Counties and Long Island.
  • Local 798 represents Make-up Artists and Hairstylists in the Entertainment Industry in Motion Picture/Film, Television, Commercials and Live Theatrical Events.
  • United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, IATSE, is a labor union and professional association of Designers, Artists, Craftspeople, and Department Coordinators, organized to protect craft standards, working conditions and wages for the entertainment and decorative arts industries. The members of Local USA 829 work in film, theatre, opera, ballet, television, industrial shows, commercials and exhibitions. The current active membership totals over 5,000.
  • Local 306 represents Stagedoor personnel, as well as Ticket Takers, Head Ushers, Directors and Ushers, which comprises the Front-Of-House staff. Stagedoor helps to ensure a safe and secure environment for performers, stage crew and guests by monitoring who enters and exits the theater.
  • Local 751 represents the Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Union who work in the Box Offices of over 60 venues. From its inception, the Union has worked closely with venue owners and producers, thus enabling management to avail itself of the expert workforce that is Local 751.
  • The Hippodrome (1120 Avenue of the Americas) is a Class A office building between 43rd and 44th streets. It is home to a wide range of top-tier tenants, including Bank Hapoalim, the British Broadcasting Company, Indeed.com, Perry Ellis and ElevatedNY, a co-working and small-suite business. The building also includes one of the premier parking garages in midtown Manhattan, operated by Edison ParkFast, and approximately 25,000 square feet of retail space.​
  • The West 45th Street Block Association is one of the oldest block groups in the Clinton/Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Many who live here are actors, musicians, and theatrical support personnel. We are the closest Block Association to the proposed Times Square Casino and will suffer the most impact if it's approved. Our view is that bad development kills communities and forces people out who create Broadway's magic.
